On August 14th and 15th, if you here the whistle of a fife, the ratta-tat-tat of drums, or the humming of Dixie…no, you’re not in a time warp, you’re at the Civil War Weekend, at the Ft. Klamath Museum grounds near Ft. Klamath, Oregon.
Just outside Crater Lake National Park, Ft. Klamath is the first small town you encounter on Hwy 62 as you head out the south Park entrance. One of the many historic features of this tiny berg is the old Ft. Klamath Museum, a small remnant of the sprawling US Army Post which was here for several years in the late 1800′s. The only remaining building today is a replica of the guardhouse, which is filled with fascinating info and memorablia related to Army post life in a remote frontier fort in the 1870s and during the last Indian war in the area with the Modoc tribes.
This weekend, however, the Fort grounds host the Cascade Civil War Society’s Civil War Weekend festivities. Actual encampments are set up, everyone hops in the time capsule and goes back 150 years to another era. Guests are most welcome — bring your camera, ask lots of questions, and learn about this important part of our heritage!

The Cascade Civil War Society is quite active with re-enactments throughout the area and year…so if you miss this one, make plans now to come next year!
Several local lodging properties have availability for the weekend, and with Crater Lake, Collier State Park and Logging Museum, the Sky Lakes Wilderness and Wood River Wetlands for hiking or horseback trail riding, the Wood River and Crystal and Recreation Creeks for fishing and canoeing…after the Civil War Weekend, better plan on staying a few extra days to enjoy this patch of paradise!

What a great way to spend a summer Sunday, and it’s less than an hour south of Crater Lake National Park! Klamath & Western is a group of wonderful volunteers who offer FREE train rides each Sunday, 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m., Memorial Day to Labor Day. The organization accepts donations to help with maintenance and also sells wonderful burgers for lunch. You’re welcome to take more than one half-hour ride, waiting your turn each time on shady benches. On our visit yesterday, there were visitors from all over the country and a family from Belgium. When we boarded the train, passengers ranged from my 91 year old mother-in-law to a youngster about 2 riding on his mom’s lap. The gentle sloped sidewalk from the parking lot to the “depot” is handicap-accessible with assistance, and a lady who arrived in a wheelchair enjoyed a ride just ahead of us. Check this website’s Attractions page for another photo and a map.

Carolyn Blackmon is multi-talented, creating her own concept of corn dolls, to woven pine-needle baskets and beaded bags. The corn dolls are inticate and exquisite, and the pine-needle baskets incorporate jade, shells, buttons…. The beaded bags are based on old turn of the century beaded sewing notion purses.
Her display at Two Rivers Gallery this July is truly worth a trip to Chiloquin.

Carolyn has said: If I was forced to label myself, I believe folk artist or craftswoman would be the best description. Many, many people have shared their skills and artistry with me over the years. From these skills I have developed my own style, mixing old with new, function with beauty; pine needle baskets with Chinese carved jade inserts, antique crystal beads on bags and hanging pincushions, old style necklaces and robes on Indian Corn, small twined bags and baskets. I feel honored to be the July artist of the month and extend an invitation to all of you to visit our beautiful Two Rivers Gallery with its talented, gifted, artists whenever you can.

You will find Two Rivers Gallery in the town of Chiloquin at 140 South 1st St, in the Chiloquin Community Center. The gallery is non-profit, fully volunteer operated, and open everyday in the summer.

Recently ROE Outfitters had 22 Boy Scouts visit the Klamath Basin from Houston Texas. The kids, their parents and troop leaders were no slackers! They explored hard.
Mountain biking near Lake of the Woods and Fish Lake wowed them.
Fishing at Four Mile Lake was productive and earned them some badges.
Moonlight canoeing was a serene and awesome experience for them too.
Paddling down the Wood River in canoes and kayaks made for a fantastic afternoon float trip.
On their last day the group paddled whitewater on the Rogue River and then hit their pillows gratefully after four days of hardcore adventure.
Does that amaze you that they could pack all of those fun adventures into four days.
If there is one thing I’ve learned its that given the chance, people that visit the Klamath Basin want to explore hard and they are rarely disappointed with the possibilities and choices the Basin has to offer. Given some direction, some gear and a guide folks can usually keep themselves so busy that they are already planning their next trip before they ever leave. Its hard to fit it all in unless you are lucky enough to call the Klamath Basin Home.
The annual July cutting horse competition is going on, and what a spectacle it is! For those wanna-be cowboys among you, come and rub elbows with the real thing. All happening this week at the Mebane Ranch in Ft. Klamath, Oregon, just 5 miles south of Crater Lake National Park.

What is a cutting competition? Cutting horses are highly specialized at “cutting” or separating cows from a small herd in an arena. Horse and rider are judged together on time and style. Many different classes exist within the competition, which runs all this week.
The BIG cutting show is the last part of August, so make your reservations early and plan to spend some time watching some of the Old West come alive!
Earlier this month I was fortunate enough to meet some drop-in birders who stopped by Crystalwood Lodge (which is a birding portal site on both the Klamath Basin Birding Trail and the Oregon Cascades Birding Trail). They birded on the property that afternoon, and came back the next morning to bird our marvelous mature aspen grove just north of the Lodge, specifically looking for woodpeckers.
Tara and Jim are good birders, and excellent photographers. They sent some photos from their Flickr stream which were stunning…no, not commercially available, just for fun. But they graciously agreed to let me share them with you, and even made a specific Flickr set for our area entitled “Klamath Basin, OR”. So you can enjoy the photos and do some “virtual birding” here.
As Tara mentioned in her email: “…Who knew I’d get another White-headed today and some very entertaining Ruddy ducks. Just finished editing and posting them, and I’ve created a set called “Klamath Basin, OR.” I’ve only included the photos from the Klamath basin in that group, so as I add new photos to Flickr your website users will be linked directly to Klamath photos.
We wanted to thank you for letting us park and bird on your beautiful property. I got a nice shot of a Downy doing some excavation work that I’ll post tonight on Flickr. The sapsuckers were at Malone and the White-headed at Rocky Point. It was a very good birding day!”
I hope you enjoy the birds as much as Tara and Jim did! What birds are you looking for? Betcha find them in our area, with the diverse habits that all converge here. Please let us know what you’re looking for, and we’ll see if anyone responds with sightings.

There was a cool warmness to the afternoon breeze. Or was it a warm coolness? I can’t remember really.
A pool of sun splashed over the sidewalk in front of the door to the gallery. So I couldn’t help noticing as the wind blew the young lady into the sunshine on the other side of the glass. She swatted at gold hair that twirled in wisps around her glowing face with two hands and opened the door with her other.
Or so it seemed.
